Shop Reminders

March 4th - 8th

Woodworkers continued to work on their cutting boards this week.

A key reminder for how the process needs to go was reviewed several times:

Each class reviewed glue up procedures. The most important thing is to practice first, so that one can ensure that the board glues up FLAT on the clamps or cauls. It is also vital to have ENOUGH cauls so that clamping pressure is distributed across ALL of the length of the joints. This glue up will fail because there are no cauls and not enough clamps.

The next glue up will be very hard to flatten and finish because the board is not flat all the way across it's bottom:

The following clamp up might be ok, though the two clamps in the middle are redundant.

February 25 - March 1

We had an interrupted week of learning; even without much snow!

Students should have shown to Mr. Zartler, and had entered into the grade book successful and on time completion of steps 1 - 3A on the cutting board protocol sheet. Students must still complete these steps, but at this point the work is late. (Jointer practice is NOT required.)

NOTE: Wood ID TEST will be 3/5 or 3/6 (5th period will be 3/11). The test will be CLOSED notes (but an example of the study notes are below).

It is important to remember that ONLY ONE (1) strip should be cut off a four square board at a time. After each strip is cut off at the band saw; the main board will need to be re-squared at the table saw.
