February 20

My apologies; but now I've got a pretty bad cold.

Steps 1 - 3A of the cutting board will be due by the end of class on Friday.

Today your lessons are as follows:

Period 5
I don't think the sub last Thursday got things quite right. You should have studied videos about building a tiny house. If you didn't do that, please let the sub know and follow this link to today's lesson.

Feel free to start class with 10 minutes of student led yoga.

Periods 7 & 8

Today you will study the making three different, but related projects. You will take notes about the projects and evaluate the three makers on a printed sheet, and turn that in to the substitute.

For each of the three projects (Wood Whisperer Shoe Rack; Howarth Shoe Storage Chest; Wandell Coat Rack) write in complete sentences about EACH of the following questions. This is a graded assignment and is to be turned in at the end of class.

1)    What constraints (limits / requirements) were there for the project?
2)    What inspired the project’s design (e.g. why did it end up looking the way that it does look?
3)    What if anything about the design got changed while it was being built?

4)    What do you like about the design? What don’t you like about the design?

1) "Just a Shoe Rack" You've seen videos by the "Wood Whisperer" Mark Spagnolo before.  In this video he discusses his approach to designing and making a shoe rack. Video run time: 16 minutes.

Spagnolo uses his table saw in a way that I don't think is safe; what is it that he does that we will NOT do in this shop?

2) Frank Howarth lives in SW Portland. He worked as an architect before devoting himself to making Youtube making videos. I believe his woodworking habits to be sound, and his videos are of high quality. He has produced furniture and fixtures for several restaurants and stores in Portland. Find out more on his Youtube channel. This video is about Frank Howarth designs and makes shoe storage. Run time 15 1/2 minutes.

3) Very geeky (and pretty darned wonderful) Mathias Wandel makes a coat rack (maybe if you email him, he will make a shoe rack). Run time 5 minutes

If time remains:
Frank Howarth makes a toy tractor
Frank and his daughter make a cat table
