For your thought:

Check out the amazing images in this article. Another thing you can do now that you've learned to work with your hands.

Thursday / Friday 21 / 22 February

Students worked on their cutting board projects and on learning and practicing table saw operations.

Periods 7 and 8 had several students working on producing "coddle boards" for advanced ceramics class. This work will be completed today by 2nd and / or 3rd period classes.

Students were to show Mr. Zartler their protocol sheet completed through step 3A before mid-term progress reports are posted on Tuesday.

Great video on end grain cutting boards

Marius Hornberger is a kind of German Mathias Wandel: he has made many of his own machines out of wood.

This link is an excellent video on making an end-grain cutting board. But be warned the fence on his table saw is different than ours, and one of his operations is not safe on our saws (see Z to discuss)!

February 20

My apologies; but now I've got a pretty bad cold.

Steps 1 - 3A of the cutting board will be due by the end of class on Friday.

Today your lessons are as follows:

Period 5
I don't think the sub last Thursday got things quite right. You should have studied videos about building a tiny house. If you didn't do that, please let the sub know and follow this link to today's lesson.

Feel free to start class with 10 minutes of student led yoga.

Periods 7 & 8

Today you will study the making three different, but related projects. You will take notes about the projects and evaluate the three makers on a printed sheet, and turn that in to the substitute.

For each of the three projects (Wood Whisperer Shoe Rack; Howarth Shoe Storage Chest; Wandell Coat Rack) write in complete sentences about EACH of the following questions. This is a graded assignment and is to be turned in at the end of class.

1)    What constraints (limits / requirements) were there for the project?
2)    What inspired the project’s design (e.g. why did it end up looking the way that it does look?
3)    What if anything about the design got changed while it was being built?

4)    What do you like about the design? What don’t you like about the design?

1) "Just a Shoe Rack" You've seen videos by the "Wood Whisperer" Mark Spagnolo before.  In this video he discusses his approach to designing and making a shoe rack. Video run time: 16 minutes.

Spagnolo uses his table saw in a way that I don't think is safe; what is it that he does that we will NOT do in this shop?

2) Frank Howarth lives in SW Portland. He worked as an architect before devoting himself to making Youtube making videos. I believe his woodworking habits to be sound, and his videos are of high quality. He has produced furniture and fixtures for several restaurants and stores in Portland. Find out more on his Youtube channel. This video is about Frank Howarth designs and makes shoe storage. Run time 15 1/2 minutes.

3) Very geeky (and pretty darned wonderful) Mathias Wandel makes a coat rack (maybe if you email him, he will make a shoe rack). Run time 5 minutes

If time remains:
Frank Howarth makes a toy tractor
Frank and his daughter make a cat table

February 14 (& 15)

Happy Valentines Day!

Sorry, folks, but I will not be in today. A friend had a bad fire at her house, and I have to help with the recovery.
Here is a poor photo of the Red Cross volunteers
who came while the firefighters were still
working to help my friend and her tenant.

TODAY'S PLAN:
There are a lot of folk who make YouTube video's. I think Anne of All Trades is one of the more reliable makers. (I believe she will be in Portland Friday and Saturday helping to demo tools at an event you should feel free to go to (it's free!) click this link for the information.

Today you are to watch a series of videos that illustrate the basics of wood frame construction. This is the way that almost all single family homes are built. In these videos Anne (and her best friend) build a tiny home. If you take Intermediate Woods next year -- which is a fabulous idea if you ask me -- you will be required to take a test that includes your knowledge of framing and other techniques demonstrated in the video. It would be great if you took some notes on the steps of the process! The first video will give you an overview. The next three will give you more details. Use the first video to figure out what your notes from the more detailed videos should include.

  • What are the major steps?

  • How do things go together square, and sturdy?

  • What layers are there to the building? What is the function of each layer?

The videos to watch are as follows:

Video #1 (a twelve minute overview of a week's work): Building a Tiny House with April Wilkerson in 7 Days This video is hosted on Anne's YouTube page.

The next videos are hosted on April Wilkerson's YouTube page.

Video #2

Tiny House Build - Foundation and Framing

Video #3

Building a Tiny House in Seven Days - Siding and Roof

Video #4

Tiny House Build - Wiring, Insulation, Drywall!

Assignments that were due today and tomorrow will now be due next week.
