Monday/ Tuesday April 23/24

Completed designs: scale drawings including AT LEAST an elevation and a plan view of the object to be made. Are due at the end of NEXT CLASS.

The Grant Art Show is May 17th, so all toys should be complete before that date.

Mr. Zartler provided the following notes about building the wood "blank" for the toy:

All woodworkers were required to take notes about this information.

Design Process

Designing is a skill; people in all sorts of jobs and in their personal lives design. Learning to think systematically (including being systematic about being open to inspiration) is a great skill to develop.

There are many different ways to visualize the process:

Welcome to 4th Quarter

We will need to remain flexible, as the tools recently delivered arrived damaged.

If you did NOT turn in your cutting board last week (a week after due date), your grade for the quarter is an F. I will evaluate and input the grade you earned as soon as possible; grades for the semester are cumulative. You may come in at flex time to work on your cutting board.

Notes:

Sandpaper is a tool.
Sandpaper makes fine dust that is bad for us; NO sanding without dust collection (running vacuum).

Tools are tools: and they need to be cared for. The missing glue scrapper was recently located in a drawer labeled "Files" which contained nothing but files and the missing glue scraper.

You will be given a test on the Jointer next class.

Demonstrating your understanding of, and ability to follow processes will be a more important part of your grade this coming quarter. (Keep your notes and design work to turn in!)

CLEAN UP needs work. We will have less time to work until cleaning become more thorough; this is no fun for me; please help my life be funner by cleaning up appropriately.

April Building Project

Our next project will be build a rolling toy.

Below are a bunch of illustrations illustrating some possibilities. Note that our toys will be made out of hard maple or beech. These woods are durable. I will provide wheels and axels, though I will teach you different ways you can make your own.

What do all of these toys have in common?
What do they have, not have?
How do you think the feel?

In what order are they put together?
How are parts attached?

What do YOU want to make? For whom?

Here are some links for you to study how others have done similar projects:

April 2nd and 3rd

Welcome Back from what I hope was a good Spring Break.

A) Before the end of this week your cutting board should be complete, including having a finish applied.

B) When your board is done, please complete a self-evaluation of your project.

Your self-evaluation should be based on three kinds of criteria:
1) Objective Criteria: What can you see, feel, (taste?), smell, etc. that helps you evaluate you work
2) Procedural Criteria: Using your protocol sheet, and other data, describe how well you followed proper procedures
3) Personal Criteria: How does this project relate to you and your abilities?

C) The Jointer test and demo is due before the end of the break. Study up (using Mauck's or with a tutorial with Mr. Zartler).
